Rossello ices victory in men's points race

(BEIJING, December 7) -- Spain's Joan Llaneras Rossello qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games when he posted a victory in the thrilling men's points race of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics here Friday night.

Rossello, with an additional five top scores, managed to gain a lap on the main field twice, thus winning an extra 40 points. The Spaniard finished with a total score of 60 pts, followed by Chris Newton of Great Britain with 54 points and Camero Meyer of Australia with 53 pts.

Racing before the home crowd, Kam-po Wong of Chinese Hong Kong also achieved an impressive 43 pts to place in the sixth position.

The Beijing event marked the second leg of the four-leg world cup, with Sydney being the first. Meyer now ranks at the top of the world cup standings with 16 pts, edging Newton by one point. The third leg will be held in Log Angeles from January 18 to 20 and the fourth in Ballerup, Demark from February 15 to 17, 2008.
